Bedford College to take over UTC Central Bedfordshire

In the past few years UTC Central Bedfordshire has achieved great success.  It has the 11th best vocational value-added score of any school in the country, ensures students progress to a university place or good employment each year, and achieved one of the best set of maths and English results in the county with 73% of students achieving both GCSE maths and English at grade C or above - the highest figure of any UTC in the country.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the number of students studying at UTC Central Bedfordshire has not increased in line with initial projects, which has had a negative impact on the funding it receives.

To this end, the UTC Central Bedfordshire Trust, which governs the school, has decided to close at the end of the teaching year in August 2016.  Bedford College, the current sponsor, will take over the building from 1st September 2016 and employ the staff, so that students can continue with their study programmes without any disruption.  To students, parents, employers and the general public, the provision will remain the same, at the same premises with the same staff.

The impact of this change on the local community will be positive, as we will now be backed by a college who is the largest provider of engineering training in the county.  This change will provide greater security for the staff and allow us to plan for the future.  Furthermore, we will now be able to offer apprenticeship training to the engineering, manufacturing, robotics, automation and IT sectors in Houghton Regis.
