Year 10 information

Dress code

Appropriate black suit jacket and trousers (not cord, jersey or denim). Girls may wear a trouser or skirt suit. UTC pin badge* to be worn on lapel. Belts, if worn, must be plain black.

Smart collared plain white work shirt or blouse to be worn tucked into the waistband.

Tie* (boys only) knotted at the collar and hanging above the waistband outside of the shirt.

Sensible smart black or brown shoes (if lace up shoes are chosen then laces must be black). Socks should be black or grey. Tights should be dark or neutral.

Trainers, canvas style shoes and any style of boots are not permitted. Work boots will be provided for every student.

You will be provided with overalls, a polo shirt and boots for the workshop.

  • No hats, caps or hoods to been worn on campus
  • Students may wish to bring a plain overcoat or jacket to wear when outside, however hoodies and hoodie-style tops and jackets are not permitted
  • In keeping with business dress, we do not expect students to come to college wearing extreme make up or hair styles. Nail varnish should be neutral and nails should be at a length so as not to inhibit practical work
  • For health and safety reasons long hair will need to be tied up when operating machinery
  • Jewellery should be minimal - ear studs are permitted but no other visible body piercings

* The UTC will provide you with a pin badge and tie (boys only).



You will need to wear a UTC T-shirt (which can be purchased from reception) and the following kit which can be purchased from a supplier of your choice:

  • Plain black or navy jogging bottoms (no logos or patterns)
  • Plain black or navy sweat top without a hood (no logos or patterns)
  • Comfortable socks
  • Appropriate sports training shoes, not canvas or fashion shoes - you will be using the leisure centre facilities and will not be allowed access to the courts unless wearing proper trainers
  • Any team kit for competitions will be provided by the UTC
  • For sports such as football, we will advise in advance if you need to bring in football boots

Leaving site

You will not be permitted to leave the site during the day, unless you are being signed out for an appointment (which your mentor needs to know of in advance).

Lunch and breaks

You will have three breaks per day - morning, lunch and just before enrichment. You can relax in the dining hall, learning resource area or courtyard during your breaks. You can take food and drink into the courtyard to eat, provided you clean up afterwards. You can take a bottle of water into most areas (with the exception of the laboratories, IT rooms and workshop) but no other food or drink must be consumed outside of the dining hall/courtyard. Please do not bring gum into the UTC. For Health and Safety reasons, no students can be left in classrooms or unsupervised areas during break times.

You can come in from 7.30am and stay until 6.00pm (5.00pm on Fridays), our open place learning resource area will be supervised.
