Student life

We expect all our students to be young people who are passionate about shaping their future in engineering or design and who have already taken the next step in this journey by joining us.

We will always set high expectations in the areas employers look for:

  • Excellent attendance and punctuality
  • High levels of organisation
  • Perseverance and hard work
  • A respectful attitude towards peers and staff
  • The ability to follow instructions by any member of staff at any point
  • Making a positive contribution to the campus and community

Your mentor will work alongside your subject teachers to support you and ensure that you get the most out of your College experience. We ultimately want to prepare you for the world of work and its demands.

Leaving site

You will be entitled to leave the site during lunchbreaks, though we encourage you to use your time wisely. Don't waste up to an hour going to the shops to get something that can be purchased on site! For health and safety reasons, you must sign out and back in upon your return.

Lunch and breaks

You will have two breaks per day - morning and lunch. You can relax in the dining hall, learning resource area or courtyard during your breaks - or go off site. You can take food and drink into the courtyard to eat, provided you clean up afterwards. You can take a bottle of water into most areas (with the exception of the laboratories, IT rooms and workshop) but no other food or drink must be consumed outside of the dining hall/courtyard. Please do not bring gum into the Engineering Technology Centre. For Health and Safety reasons, no students can be left in classrooms or unsupervised areas during break times.

Time off

Your attendance record gets increasingly important as you reach the point where you will be applying for jobs, apprenticeships and university. You are made aware of your term dates well in advance, so please do not book driving lessons and other non-essential appointments during your lesson times.

Part-time work

We appreciate that many post-16 students work part-time. This must not impact on your studies and you will not be entitled to time off to attend work.

Private study

Quiet areas are provided for private study. Students will have private study periods included in their timetable, for additional research and revision.

The cafeteria is open for breakfast, morning break and lunch time, serving a range of hot and cold snacks and meals. A selection of sandwiches, jacket potatoes, salads, hot and cold drinks is always available. You may bring a packed lunch if you wish; however no food may be consumed outside of the cafeteria. Absolutely no gum is allowed on campus.

Code of Conduct

The Code of Conduct is a document which sets out how we expect all students and staff to behave in order to provide a safe, purposeful and positive learning environment. We ask all students to sign our Code of Conduct (including our IT Code of Conduct) when they enrol, and all staff when they join us. There is a summary of our Code of Conduct in every teaching area.
